International polo players, Maxi Malacanza and Ariel Ponzi, swapped turf for surf at the weekend to officially launch the Beach Polo Cup Dubai 2016 presented by Cadillac taking place at Skydive Dubai for the third year.
The Argentine players wowed beach-goers on the sands of the five-star Ritz Carlton, Dubai, the event’s official hotel partner, in a display of forehands, backhands, neck and tail shots, dribbles, taps and other polo moves. Maxi and Ariel’s display comes as the Beach Polo Cup Dubai readies to bring together thousands of polo fans, celebrities and sporting enthusiasts from across the UAE, wider region and abroad.
“Each year the Beach Polo Cup Dubai attracts the local, regional and international polo community to Dubai for a signature showcase of our beach variation of the Sport of Kings,” said Gaby Katiela, Tournament and Event Director. “The event provides an opportunity for existing polo fans and those new to the sport to watch the polo players in a luxurious, premium environment that highlights the best of Dubai. While the Beach Polo Cup Dubai maintains the prestige of the sport, the event strips away the old, privileged perception of polo in our luxury lifestyle concept that appeals to a younger and social crowd.”
The 2016 edition of the Beach Polo Cup Dubai will be held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman, Dubai Sports Council. The organisers of Beach Polo Cup Dubai are also honoured and proud to announce that for the second consecutive year the event will receive the support of the Dubai Sports Council.
Prior to the tournament, an exclusive, invite-only Player’s Night will take place on Thursday 31 March at the Ritz Carlton, Dubai.
Attention then turns to the main event on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 April as the mix of Emirati and international players take to a purpose-built beach venue at Skydive Dubai. The on-field chukkers will take place with the iconic Dubai Marina skyline as a backdrop.
“We are thrilled to be returning to Skydive Dubai for the third consecutive year,” Gaby Katiela added. “In Dubai’s competitive event landscape, our loyal Beach Polo Cup supporters expect a sport-meets-lifestyle experience and we look forward to this year’s edition.”
Day one of the tournament starts with guest arrival from 5pm with the official opening ceremony kicking off at 6pm, followed by two matches played against the setting sun. The day two action sees the highly anticipated semi-finals, Grand Final and Awarding ceremony, while off-field highlights include sponsor-led interactive zones.
